Character Creation
Once you have taken a look at the above links, you can begin working on your first character's profile. First, make sure that you've signed up for the site with an OOC "hub" account. This will make posting on the forum and using our sub account system easier. If you created an account with the wrong name in mind, no worries. You can edit your username at any time by going to Account Details in the navigation bar at the top right of the page.
1. Making a New Sub Acccount
Each character you make will need to be registered as a new sub account, with your character's name as the username. You can switch between character sub accounts using the link icon in the top bar, for easy posting. You must be logged into your main OOC account to create a sub account. You can create new sub accounts by clicking the link icon in the top bar and clicking "create new sub account," by clicking your account name in the top bar and clicking "New Sub Account," or by clicking here.2. Writing Your Character
Before you can start posting, you’ll need to have your character’s profile submitted. But it doesn't need to be finished! We encourage players to keep going back and revising details as their character develops. To get a profile up, go to the Character Profiles section of the forum, and create a new thread. The main posting box is a freeform space for your character's history or overview description. This is also the best place to put an image of your character.
Having a detailed history is a good start to understanding a character, but you should also have an idea of where your character is going in the future. What are their goals? Where are their failings? What motivates them, or what things hold them back? It may be helpful to keep these kinds of questions in mind when writing this section.
Once you have a good overview going, scroll down and continue filling out the rest of the profile fields. These fields will automatically format themselves when you post the thread!
Tip: Extra CustomizationIf you'd prefer to make your character's profile from scratch, then you don't have to follow the form template. Simply leave all other fields blank and only work in the primary posting box.
Add a Profile & Tracker Link
After your character's profile has been posted up, it's good to add a link to it for easy access. This link will show up in the user side profile, underneath your avatar. A tracker link is also handy - this can either lead to a plot page, your personal Tracker, or your character's Recent Posts in their profile section. To add a Profile and Tracker link, click your character's name in the top navigation bar. Click "Account Details", and then scroll down until you see the Character Profile and Tracker fields. Paste the complete URL into each field and then click 'Save'.
You're done! What's next?
As soon as your character profile has been completed, you can begin writing in your first thread! A good place to start is by reaching out to others in the community to see if there's something your character can jump into. A lot of the plotting action happens on the Shroudweavers discord, but you can also post up a plotting thread or a wanted ad in our Events & Planning forum to gauge interest. You can also browse Character Trackers to scout out folk's posting preferences, or set up your own!If you're eager to get writing, keep an eye out for threads with the OPEN prefix - these are threads you can jump into right away. Also look out for thread with the DARE prefix, that have no responses yet. These are open to the first person who replies, after which it becomes a 1-on-1 thread with the initial poster.
You can also try starting your own open or dare thread. The seasonal prompts posted in the Events & Planning section is a great place to go for inspiration if you are looking for thread ideas!
